Grebe Bench by Laura Corsiglia
Artist's Statement
Grebe Bench evokes a family of Western Grebes, one of the many amazing seabirds who are active in our region's waters. This design shows two young chicks, riding on and swimming near a parent. The Grebes' eyes are bright red. There are also points of color in the form of bottle caps, inlaid and nailed deep into the wood (with sharp edges toward the wood) as formal elements in the vegetation design.
The horizontal and vertical forms of the bench enter into the composition as water and air, essential dimensions of life for an aquatic bird and also mainstays of every resident of the Pacific Northwest.
The back panel shows a Western Grebe chick swimming, with ripples and lines linking plant designs.
Grebe Bench can be seen alone or as a companion/mirror to my work titled Loon Bench.
